As the 86th Legislative Session continues to draw nearer, I would like to thank my constituents for their support and feedback throughout this past legislative session and during the current interim period. I would like to give you all an update on the central issues my office and I have been working on and will continue to focus on during the interim period.
As a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, one position I am honored to hold is a Chair of the Texas Legislature Veterans Caucus. Veterans' issues are a top priority for my office. During this past session, I was proud to have passed House Bill 271, which established the Veterans Recovery Pilot Program to provide certain veterans who suffer from Traumatic Brain Injuries or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder with hyperbaric oxygen treatment. I believe that veterans are important contributors to our state and country and I will continue to advocate for legislation to support these brave men and women.
Furthermore, during this interim period, my office is continuing to advocate for essential issues of reform in the Texas Child Protection Services system. Our foster children in state care need to be a top priority for our state. We cannot deny the fact that all children and youth in the child welfare system are impacted by trauma. To better support these children, we must not only understand what trauma is, but also the impact it has on them. I will continue in the next Legislative Session to push policies that intensify trauma informed care training for everyone who works with children in the foster care system.
Additionally, preserving pro-life and family values continues to be a top concern for my office. I have consistently been a defender of those children under threat from Pro-Choice legislation and will continue to speak for these children who do not have a voice.
I am honored to have the privilege of serving you in the Texas House of Representatives. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I may be of any assistance. I look forward to continuing our work to make Texas the best state to live, work and raise a family.
God Bless Texas!
State Representative Rick Miller
